Housed in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, this oil on canvas painting depicts an intimate close-up of a woman’s genitalia, a daring portrayal that shocked the art world and remains controversial even today. Courbet, a leader of the Realist movement, aimed to depict subjects with unflinching honesty, pushing back against idealized representations of the human body typical of classical art.
